</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If we've talked to you about our yard at all, we've talked to you about the feral cat colony next door. It's a long and sordid story, but to summarize: There's a feral cat colony. Next door. There are at least 7 of them. They poop in our yard. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This has led us to experiment with some wacky approaches to keeping them out of our raised beds, where we grow food we'd like to eat. Last year, we built frames and grids. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq2I1CdRDt6oPV-JycHE4dfnma7OkVKmV81TcBJ1kWianNGgHcGhphk6IiVfYD-9PNX1gSSGPrIZGGIXHIt0oQWuZ2ur6h1_NvGQkWU6cMHQCDY72edt5fO7UF1KOQ5Kdw3wIz/s1600/IMG_1295.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq2I1CdRDt6oPV-JycHE4dfnma7OkVKmV81TcBJ1kWianNGgHcGhphk6IiVfYD-9PNX1gSSGPrIZGGIXHIt0oQWuZ2ur6h1_NvGQkWU6cMHQCDY72edt5fO7UF1KOQ5Kdw3wIz/s1600/IMG_1295.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you look closely, you can see kitty paw prints in the middle bed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We regrouped, and had a banner tomato year, and ate leafy greens into the winter. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's time to prep the beds for the new growing season, and we took a new approach. Here are our beds as they looked post winter: cover crop on the left; fall-sale blueberry bushes quickly planted in the middle and far beds for the winter; weeds on the right. Notice the left and middle beds have nearly exploded in their rottenness. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYXPVA0KxFyX4C4Bsj3GYQf_2bjXUBB8GSvM0UTjIJPh4XQRnn31rKfO8qJgIV3qr6LnXpp_e1sWsC-HYjmTZygz8c0-GXue3lfwH2oThbx5uU5E-suT6x3EfnXbP2EJwACxiM/s1600/IMAG1657.jpg" height="181" width="320" /></div>
<br />
And now: Two beautiful new beds, and Collin's brilliant hoop-house hack. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ1l67ltG2arExiU_ydKRhNprI03KQ5Jp7CZ9lXuoorgnVhMjuvvQQO6DXhiQU31ZDaIKj53L09mAyGfQShr4YQ97sOhYwy1sldvudMpqFOg4GvFi8f80dLCU9OKt9nbTHoxuG/s1600/IMAG1660.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJ1l67ltG2arExiU_ydKRhNprI03KQ5Jp7CZ9lXuoorgnVhMjuvvQQO6DXhiQU31ZDaIKj53L09mAyGfQShr4YQ97sOhYwy1sldvudMpqFOg4GvFi8f80dLCU9OKt9nbTHoxuG/s1600/IMAG1660.jpg" height="181" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We created a basic hoop-house framework with flexible PVC pipe, and covered them with bird netting. Two days in, and no kitty incursions; plenty of room for veggies to grow and relatively easy access.<br />

<br />For anyone interested, here's some work we've done on the front of the house: removed grass and native plantings on the right; removed grass and rock garden in the parking strip. Note: we did not buy those stones; I simply removed the grass and minimal soil that existed there. New crabapple trees courtesy of Friends of Trees!<br />

We've replaced a furnace. We've unpacked some things.<br />
<br />
But in blog time, we're just up to our paint job.<br />
<br />
Questionable decisions had been made in the basement. The ceiling had been well-insulated, but newspaper had been stuffed in the patchily-insulated walls. And no one had ever waterproofed the cement walls, which were <a href="https://www.google.com/search?q=spalling+basement&hl=en&tbo=u&tbm=isch&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ncW6UJP6C9DpigKEmYCYCg&ved=0CDEQsAQ&biw=1280&bih=629">spalling</a> in spots. You learn all kinds of new words as a homeowner. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W4mtmWXQGtM/UJNSxDHIdwI/AAAAAAAANl8/aKp9xKa9nHs/s1600/IMG_0434.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W4mtmWXQGtM/UJNSxDHIdwI/AAAAAAAANl8/aKp9xKa9nHs/s320/IMG_0434.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qge2s3vIf9A/UJNSxvI-EVI/AAAAAAAANmE/M8fd0O4JmxA/s1600/IMG_0436.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qge2s3vIf9A/UJNSxvI-EVI/AAAAAAAANmE/M8fd0O4JmxA/s320/IMG_0436.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was most pleased with the colors we picked for the living and dining rooms. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l0JHH-8qcP0/UKCI3fLzwpI/AAAAAAAANoc/tXZ9b6TLRJU/s1600/IMG_0552.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-l0JHH-8qcP0/UKCI3fLzwpI/AAAAAAAANoc/tXZ9b6TLRJU/s320/IMG_0552.JPG" height="229" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The master bedroom turned out a bit differently than I'd expected. I love the way the blue looks with the brown, but I haven't fully embraced the yellow ceiling.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nj7Z1IBip6g/UKCJzVf4mpI/AAAAAAAANpE/Gva1DRsZ3-M/s1600/IMG_0509.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nj7Z1IBip6g/UKCJzVf4mpI/AAAAAAAANpE/Gva1DRsZ3-M/s320/IMG_0509.JPG" height="213" width="320" /> </a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But you can see how our spackling skills made a difference in the state of the un-replastered walls: </div>

Weeks later, the dust continues to settle. But! Our plaster walls were whole again, and ready to prime and paint.<br />

With four rooms of rough, crumbling walls and a desire to move in by the end of the month, we called in the professionals to skim coat everything they could.<br />
<br />
So Collin's office went from this: <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nbZkQ8-iWfQ/UH5H7HCa7EI/AAAAAAAANh0/hzIANMkdfkU/s1600/office.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nbZkQ8-iWfQ/UH5H7HCa7EI/AAAAAAAANh0/hzIANMkdfkU/s1600/office.jpg" height="241" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
To this, mid-wallpaper removal:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--r5wKgq3tYU/UJNWAsye_2I/AAAAAAAANnE/3v98BE3rTAI/s1600/2012-10-15_21-16-57_815.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/--r5wKgq3tYU/UJNWAsye_2I/AAAAAAAANnE/3v98BE3rTAI/s1600/2012-10-15_21-16-57_815.jpg" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
To patched holes: <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0vP-w-SNd7U/UJNSv5wbYAI/AAAAAAAANlg/8D8TZ-Ly6tQ/s1600/IMG_0427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0vP-w-SNd7U/UJNSv5wbYAI/AAAAAAAANlg/8D8TZ-Ly6tQ/s1600/IMG_0427.JPG" height="213" width="320" /></a></div>

Only one wall appeared to be held up by the wallpaper,though. This wall, between the living room and the kitchen, was in the worst shape. Nothing is more frighteningly exhilarating than taking this:<br />

Paint the dining room, living room, master bathroom, bedroom, office, landing, stairs and guest room.<br />
<br />
Before we move in.<br />
<br />
We knew the walls had been wallpapered at some point -- the seams were clearly visible in nearly all the rooms. We agreed that looked terrible, and if we were going to do this thing, we were going to do it right. And doing it right meant removing wallpaper. We'd heard horror stories, but we girded our loins and prepared for battle.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UiU4M4o_uhs/UIOAZ5E5VbI/AAAAAAAANj8/ggG9NqXrZmw/s1600/2012-10-13_09-27-59_238.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UiU4M4o_uhs/UIOAZ5E5VbI/AAAAAAAANj8/ggG9NqXrZmw/s320/2012-10-13_09-27-59_238.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I found a bubble in the dining room wall and made a start. The paint, and top layer of wallpaper, never to be seen by human eyes again, came off easily, leaving several layers of wallpaper below.<br />
<br />
I loved the archeology of the task, and, to be honest, the picking off of long strips of paint and wallpaper. Bit by bit, we unearthed our vintage dining room wallpaper.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IvL7-gpaNlM/UIOASzTAZHI/AAAAAAAANj0/R00vs5ye_I4/s1600/2012-10-14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IvL7-gpaNlM/UIOASzTAZHI/AAAAAAAANj0/R00vs5ye_I4/s640/2012-10-14.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I know it's crazy, but I kind of love it.<br />
<br />
The seasonal snowflake wallpaper, however, seems like a questionable choice.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mRf37NeSEAM/UIOAa9Cp7jI/AAAAAAAANkM/9e_IBmQCBSU/s1600/IMG_20121013_120018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mRf37NeSEAM/UIOAa9Cp7jI/AAAAAAAANkM/9e_IBmQCBSU/s320/IMG_20121013_120018.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />Jocelynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15949266385418416911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37430589.post-78419984715352304722012-10-19T05:40:00.001-07:002012-10-19T05:43:24.061-07:00Was it like this when we bought it?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So it's not like we didn't notice the imperfections. That upstairs window really needed some love. The ceiling in the living room had some imperfections. We'd want to repaint. The bones -- and muscles, and joints, and tendons -- were great. A new haircut, some make-up, maybe a good night's sleep was all this body needed to be looking her best.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hello, family and friends! Welcome to our new house.</div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mIVEzjoD7lo/UH6y-_SNPbI/AAAAAAAANiM/eAVOPgiPtYI/s1600/This+New+Old+House.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wnv7GbOLXOw/UH5H2UazAAI/AAAAAAAANgw/k5FvCtBh9YE/s1600/Front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-wnv7GbOLXOw/UH5H2UazAAI/AAAAAAAANgw/k5FvCtBh9YE/s320/Front.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We've made a bit of a mess of the place already, so I thought I'd start you off with the MLS photos so you could get a sense of how we first saw it. See if you can count all of the area rugs!<br />
<br />
You enter into the living room:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-to4YT2U05-Y/UH5H22m7peI/AAAAAAAANg0/TQltbCgezWY/s1600/livingroom2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-to4YT2U05-Y/UH5H22m7peI/AAAAAAAANg0/TQltbCgezWY/s320/livingroom2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />

Which leads to the recently redone kitchen:<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It has three bedrooms -- two upstairs, one downstairs (the brown room). Collin will use the yellow room for his office:</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mIVEzjoD7lo/UH6y-_SNPbI/AAAAAAAANiM/eAVOPgiPtYI/s1600/This+New+Old+House.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mIVEzjoD7lo/UH6y-_SNPbI/AAAAAAAANiM/eAVOPgiPtYI/s400/This+New+Old+House.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
And a funny little landing at the top of the stairs. I think this is going to be my favorite room once it's full of books, plants, and a basket of yarn.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rRvFqCKKa-c/UH5H5sjF1jI/AAAAAAAANhc/3OQGaVLGH_w/s1600/landing1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rRvFqCKKa-c/UH5H5sjF1jI/AAAAAAAANhc/3OQGaVLGH_w/s320/landing1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
There are two full bathrooms. The upstairs is entertainingly quirky. It's a recent addition -- you can see it in the front of the house, upstairs. It's about 18-20' long, and yes, that whole far end of the room is a side-by-side, completely open bath and shower.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9-hOZy6dyNg/UH5H6yx-AQI/AAAAAAAANhs/SnRKFrSS6G4/s1600/masterbath2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-9-hOZy6dyNg/UH5H6yx-AQI/AAAAAAAANhs/SnRKFrSS6G4/s320/masterbath2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's a sunny, south-facing back deck. You know, for when it's sunny in Portland:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And a blank slate of a backyard:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It has its charms and quirks, and we discover more every day. Smartly-arranged kitchen organizers? Check. Friendly neighbors? Check. Rooms without electrical outlets? Check. Bathroom lights that turn on by themselves? Check.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Neighborhood feral cats? We've counted eight so far.</div>

All that was missing were two bobbins, and the instruction manual.<br /><br />It started, well, this past summer. I'd been smitten with spinning for awhile, and finally felt free enough to take it up once grad school was over. I visited <a href="http://www.theyarntree.com/">The Yarn Tree</a> in Brooklyn while I was home -- a lovely shop, and I got to meet Linda LaBelle, the owner and author of <a href="http://www.powells.com/biblio/1-9780307352538-0">The Yarn Lover's Guide to Hand Dyeing</a>. She was very sweet and very helpful. I will admit to fearing that the talk would be sort of a rehash of her blog, or tired knitting humor. It really wasn't. Her commitment to a bit (drunken yarn company executives, anyone?) was unparalleled. I also enjoyed how she honestly seemed taken aback by the size of the crowd -- since I felt the same way. As a knitter, and one who knits in public and attends my very own weekly knitting circle, I have difficult time describing why it was so odd to see, literally, hundreds of people sitting in one place and knitting. Why should that seems so extraordinary? The topic of the talk spoke to this a bit -- knitters are all different, and few other hobbies/activities/arts are so easily portable. Waiting for a plane, for an appointment, people are usually either reading or watching TV. Knitters stick out, and no one really knows what to make of us. Putting us all in one room sort of turns all that on its head.<br /><br />One thing that does unite us -- we like to show off our work. I wore a mohair/alpaca/merino blend in an absolute oven of a room until I almost passed out. But my sweater looked good.<br /><br />It was quite fun. Aside from the Yarn Harlot, my new knitting buddies <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/blueknit">BlueKnit</a> and <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/people/monkeycat">MonkeyCat</a> (her excellent pics are <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/24455899@N05/sets/72157604688651427/detail/">here</a>) were along, adding to the sense of knitting community -- and troublemaking. The three of us, in search of food, after claiming our seats, took a shortcut back to the car. We rounded a corner, only to bust into SPM being interviewed. On camera. And she definitely noticed, as we ran away (literally!) giggling like high schoolers. Oops.<br /><br />Aside from that mild humiliation, I had a grand time checking off another knitting rite of passage (LYS owner recognizes me? Check. Knitting group? Check. Blog? Check.). On to the fiber festivals and the taking of sock pictures in front of public landmarks!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Most recent podcast: <a href="http://www.cast-on.com/">Cast On</a>.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">What I'm reading: <a href="http://www.powells.com/biblio/1-9781594489587-8">The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao</a>, by Junot Diaz.<br />Currently listening to: <a href="http://www.jmorrisonmusic.com/">Joshua Morrison's Home</a>.<br /></span></div>Jocelynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15949266385418416911noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37430589.post-81504626653003421732008-04-06T21:11:00.009-07:002008-04-07T21:35:51.505-07:00FO: Baltic Knee Socks<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgORUXu4RcQdu6sMEkcXUiwoP_yhQwmLKDtp3gy2vDNuktmfQ93jjbRhXld-W7bsLeIQAO3u162syJixKqt5dRl5ErDVR-2zyuo5AfFDaHeQaRB8G1JiP0CXjn6HG7BVvruqyBG/s1600-h/Baltic_tall.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgORUXu4RcQdu6sMEkcXUiwoP_yhQwmLKDtp3gy2vDNuktmfQ93jjbRhXld-W7bsLeIQAO3u162syJixKqt5dRl5ErDVR-2zyuo5AfFDaHeQaRB8G1JiP0CXjn6HG7BVvruqyBG/s320/Baltic_tall.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186352578568887858" border="0" /></a>Ravelry project link <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/WildThingsRun/clementines-baltic-socks">here</a>.<br /><br />Pattern: Clementine's Baltic Socks [<a href="http://members.iinet.net.au/%7Escotted/Pictures/ClementinesBalticSocks.pdf">free PDF</a>], by <a href="http://clementineshoes.blogspot.com/">Diana Jones</a>.<br /><br />Yarn: Less than one skein of <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=32548">Fearless Fibers</a> (<a href="http://fearlessfibers.blogspot.com/">blog here</a>) Superwash Merino Wool Sock Yarn in Brick House.<br /><br />Needles: Size 1 bamboo DPNs.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijKlV7KF8quD2oH05Q4iocXJQsDWfxoPDQNjxfi2pD_A4vdlXgEhhx9kK4b78EhDCpCqaNbrhkbloaHZy_w6pKoli-jyfg-YN1nGkeWQtftHMsCRy3TMPYgE9DlqgBRK0bbRLz/s1600-h/Baltic_sexy.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijKlV7KF8quD2oH05Q4iocXJQsDWfxoPDQNjxfi2pD_A4vdlXgEhhx9kK4b78EhDCpCqaNbrhkbloaHZy_w6pKoli-jyfg-YN1nGkeWQtftHMsCRy3TMPYgE9DlqgBRK0bbRLz/s320/Baltic_sexy.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5186354790477045314" border="0" /></a>Size: To fit a size 6.5 foot.<br /><br />Mods: To make the socks knee-high, I added shaping in the handy stockinette side panels, and made the ribbing at the top longer.<br /><br />For: Me!<br /><br />Time: Casted on July 2007; finished February 2008. It's been nearly a month since I posted last, and I can only partly blame it on the new job. Because I work remotely, I spend most of the day tethered to my laptop; once I'm finished, the last thing I want to do is spend time online. I've even been neglecting Ravelry!<br /><br />I have been pretty busy, though. The knitting, admittedly, has been slow. Only two more pattern rounds before I finish the <a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/Hemlock%20Ring%20Blanket">Hemlock Ring Blanket</a>, which continues to look like a big, unphotographable blob. I can't wait to block it -- my goal is to finish it this week, and to take lots of blocking pictures. The only other active project on the needles is the second of the Baltic knee-high socks, which have been good for travel. The Urban Aran continues to require a new collar and then a zipper, and it's just occurred to me that I might have some down time next week (house-sitting in Seattle (yay!), and TreeHugger will be out of town on business) to focus on it.<br /><br />So, instead of knitting pictures, I leave you with "How I spent my Thanksgiving vacation" pictures. I trekked, with TH, his family and friends, to a hut in the Colorado mountains. This east-coast flatlander had a great time, even if I was sucking wind for three days.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSOnnbb90O_yuUp7FUr24LPN0T0aenRHkYhKJCmnTk3exe3_dNGCHKtAsnyF1Ft8b8I0kZ7eiWh2yZn1LWIFFiD240_R_DGc_5kdZuHl21LkHGJJ8ceck3jaoW7t7NahkQ2DRs/s1600-h/Jim_cabin.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSOnnbb90O_yuUp7FUr24LPN0T0aenRHkYhKJCmnTk3exe3_dNGCHKtAsnyF1Ft8b8I0kZ7eiWh2yZn1LWIFFiD240_R_DGc_5kdZuHl21LkHGJJ8ceck3jaoW7t7NahkQ2DRs/s320/Jim_cabin.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5140990811268845522" border="0" /></a><br />Oh, here's something fiber related! I overheat like crazy once I get moving, and so I love my calorimetry. It keeps my ears nice and warm, but lets me vent a bit from the top of my head. I originally knit it up using Malabrigo on size 9 needles, which made a pretty loose fabric that let winter winds through -- so I took a deep breath, and threw it in the wash. On a weekday?Is this a... what day is this?<br /><br />Apologies for the lack of posting -- things have been busier than usual around here (which isn't difficult, as most days find me in my pajamas until about 10 or 11am). They have been busier because -- I have a job! After several months of searching, moving, applying, and interviewing, I've landed a job with a great conservation organization in Oregon. It's temporary for the moment, but (finger's crossed) should go permanent once the next round of grants come through. And extra good news -- Corvallis has a great LYS (<a href="http://www.fncyarn.com/">Fiber Nooks and Crannies)</a> with spinning supplies and classes!<br /><br />I celebrated with a knitting splurge -- I bought a handful of color cards from <a href="http://knitpicks.com/">KnitPicks</a>, as well as two books, one practical and one impractical, as a true splurge should be. The practical is <a href="http://www.knitpicks.com/The+Knitter%27s+Book+of+Yarn_BD30962.html">The Knitter's Book of Yarn</a>, bought as a direct result of my <a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/tangled%20yoke">Tangled Yoke</a> yarn selection frustrations. There's an excerpt on alpaca in the winter <a href="http://www.interweaveknits.com/preview/2007_winter.asp">Interweave Knits</a>, and I think it's going to be a useful addition to my knitting library. The impractical: <a href="http://www.knitpicks.com/books/book_display.aspx?id=30882">Twinkle's Big City Knits</a>. This is not a book I'd normally buy -- I prefer technique books to pattern books, and simple, classic patterns to trendy, striking ones (nearly every shirt I own is a long-sleeved, solid-colored, cotton knit). But there was something about a few of these patterns -- <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/shopping-tunic">Shopping Tunic</a>, <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/karate-sweater">Karate Sweater</a> (both Ravelry links) -- that I really enjoyed and kept coming back to (I think <a href="http://knitlit.blogspot.com/">knit lit kate</a>'s <a href="http://knitlit.blogspot.com/search?q=twinkle">love affair with Twinkle</a> helped plant the seed).<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ8tW8tW3W7IJjpugwrlKbPIWYXvoTH93uR4NFbt8q2kbE2_-1VV90rATTuLitmlAjgfqm0vWcIUDZYe4D9IzlX_so5m_kIYA9rgG8ctA_KtKSkYixanAxSeeeeLBfPb67lPUw/s1600-h/books.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQ8tW8tW3W7IJjpugwrlKbPIWYXvoTH93uR4NFbt8q2kbE2_-1VV90rATTuLitmlAjgfqm0vWcIUDZYe4D9IzlX_so5m_kIYA9rgG8ctA_KtKSkYixanAxSeeeeLBfPb67lPUw/s320/books.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131814251987593938" border="0" /></a><br />The arrival of these two books, as well as finishing the Tangled Yoke and <a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/Joel%27s%20Hat">Joel's hat</a>, has led to some serious project lust. The afore-mentioned shopping tunic is tempting as an instant gratification project, and I've been drooling over the <a href="http://cache.lionbrand.com/patterns/60618AD.html">Lion Brand</a> <a href="http://www.figandplum.com/archives/000818.html">Pringle sweater knock-off</a> for awhile now. Conveniently, I also have LYS credit burning a hole in my pocket -- thanks, four extra skeins of Tangled Yoke yarn! <br /><br />On the knitting front, I'm about halfway through <a href="http://brooklyntweed.blogspot.com/2007/08/hemlock-ring-blanket.html">Jared's Hemlock Ring Blanket</a>, which I am loving. The blanket will be a Christmas gift for my Mom, and should be done (knock on wood) way ahead of time. I never plan this far ahead, and I have to say I'm quite pleased. I may even cast on another once I'm done with the first, for a recently married friend with a baby on the way. (Excuse the poor picture -- I was too lazy for a proper photo shoot).<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqKg6uiBN7S-PoA0HJKLYx8mVV0fETWt9kx13zp9A4uJdrk1AY8N_1X5rXuOcgJwvEvp8cGk6lfb4Vjw0RdUSZgvOSU2Jb3vTeKIYtbmE8djWUO6_4ahxGPqwdeB7cmwWF0Dxu/s1600-h/20071106_1870.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgqKg6uiBN7S-PoA0HJKLYx8mVV0fETWt9kx13zp9A4uJdrk1AY8N_1X5rXuOcgJwvEvp8cGk6lfb4Vjw0RdUSZgvOSU2Jb3vTeKIYtbmE8djWUO6_4ahxGPqwdeB7cmwWF0Dxu/s320/20071106_1870.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5131769043161836226" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /></span><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Most recent podcast: <a href="http://limenviolet.blogspot.com/">Lime and Violet</a>.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Currently listening to: The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_seahawks">Seahawks</a> game/<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_simpsons">The Simpsons</a></span><span style="font-size:85%;">.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">What I'm reading: <a href="http://www.blogger.com/doris%20lessing">Doris Lessing</a>'s <a href="http://www.powells.com/biblio/61-9780060924171-0"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Real Thing</span></a>.</span><br /></div>Jocelynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15949266385418416911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37430589.post-9347342526675151882007-10-31T12:23:00.000-07:002007-11-05T08:40:12.270-08:00FO: Tangled Yoke Cardigan<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixuZJEEFSLI7KoWqdlyu25Eg7f7l7Cnmtpql-OroyRUaT6TrssdQrkmu4ekr7Hois-mBOfojs2FwlNg4mM10-r4fv4F1pP0iK14wKYLkTT8yceStfi_RXm366gq-4NeaLeBUXT/s1600-h/river_shot.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixuZJEEFSLI7KoWqdlyu25Eg7f7l7Cnmtpql-OroyRUaT6TrssdQrkmu4ekr7Hois-mBOfojs2FwlNg4mM10-r4fv4F1pP0iK14wKYLkTT8yceStfi_RXm366gq-4NeaLeBUXT/s320/river_shot.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127584123434216274" border="0" /></a>Finally.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyR1DCwIcBYDj8yTMpNBkNF4EMA_Z0b5cJUsf9EBmnHw8s0d0nUPsFgM1ybkzaXACH5RpP0NVOnzMBMDb9cme2OHBBNiF9b82RDIlFHoaOz9yd6iVQ4eP3v_VRkJsY_GGR6vyt/s1600-h/full_shot.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyR1DCwIcBYDj8yTMpNBkNF4EMA_Z0b5cJUsf9EBmnHw8s0d0nUPsFgM1ybkzaXACH5RpP0NVOnzMBMDb9cme2OHBBNiF9b82RDIlFHoaOz9yd6iVQ4eP3v_VRkJsY_GGR6vyt/s320/full_shot.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127584230808398690" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.ravelry.com/projects/WildThingsRun/tangled-yoke-cardigan">Ravelry project link here</a>.<br /><br />Pattern: <a href="http://eunnyjang.com/knit/">Eunny Jang</a>'s <a href="http://www.interweaveknits.com/galleries/bonus/fall2007/jang.asp">Tangled Yoke Cardigan</a> (Ravelry link <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/tangled-yoke-cardigan">here</a>) from the <a href="http://www.interweaveknits.com/preview/2007_fall.asp">Fall 2007 Interweave Knits</a>.<br /><br />Yarn: 10 balls of <a href="http://www.josharp.com.au/Yarn/Yarn.html">Jo Sharp Alpaca Kid Lustre</a> (Ravelry link <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/jo-sharp-alpaca-kid-lustre">here</a>) in colorway 855, Cassis.<br /><br />Needles:<br /><ul><li>26" US 4/3.5mm bamboo circulars</li><li>26" US 5/3.75mm bamboo circulars</li><li>26" US 0/2 mm Addi Turbo circulars</li><li>US 4/3.5mm bamboo dpns</li></ul>Size: Smallest size, 34" bust.<br /><br />Mods: Only those required for the slightly heavier yarn weight -- one less buttonhole, fewer rows.<br /><br />Notions: I went with these buttons (which I swear, nearly match the color of the sweater in real life).<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvFr9ew9kY99C3KRQBGxHvP1W8LJoE048P9r0tDUYoaixqguYFOHt1rWUSItft-I-P11hDHF6PG13Sb3vgBW2qhC0fcMyu-U6yHOCwNL0zrN85ZBAciofHVYd1WK1tmGXVled_/s1600-h/button_close.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvFr9ew9kY99C3KRQBGxHvP1W8LJoE048P9r0tDUYoaixqguYFOHt1rWUSItft-I-P11hDHF6PG13Sb3vgBW2qhC0fcMyu-U6yHOCwNL0zrN85ZBAciofHVYd1WK1tmGXVled_/s320/button_close.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127589702596733810" border="0" /></a>For: Me.<br /><br />Time: Cast on: August 29th. Last button attached: October 19th.<br /><br />Techniques Learned: buttonholes, three-needle bind off, how to make a yoked sweater.<br /><br />Thoughts: A gorgeous design by Eunny. I wasn't completely sold on the tweediness of the yarn called for for this sweater, and so I wanted a solid-colored yarn. When I went to my new LYS, I had a great time talking with the owner and sorting through the store's massive selection for alternatives. I was in such a rush to cast on -- I wish that I had slept on my yarn selection a little bit longer. I had picked out a few yarns on my own that felt and looked to be the same weight as Rowan Felted Tweed, but when I discussed yarn substitution with the owner, she directed me to some true dk weight yarns. I chose the Jo Sharp for the color, the softness, the little bit of shine (it is lovely yarn), but I should have known that the mohair content would make the finished product a little fuzzier than I really wanted. The slightly heavier weight, too, required some fairly simple modification to account for the different gauge. I knit the instructions for the smallest size (34" bust) in order to end up with sweater with measurements splitting the 34" and 38" sizes, and allowing for the right amount of negative ease across my chest.<br /><br />All in all I'm <span style="font-style: italic;">very </span>happy, but not absolutely thrilled with the end result. I think the sweater is lovely, and the cables do show up better than I'd thought they would. The color is gorgeous, and the yarn is soft and warm. But -- it's just a wee bit too heavy and fuzzy. In the end I have to say -- I wish I'd knit it with different yarn.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Most recent podcast: <a href="http://limenviolet.blogspot.com/">Lime and Violet</a>.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Currently listening to: <a href="http://www.wilcoworld.net/">Wilco</a>'s <a href="http://wilcoworld.net/sbs/index.php">Sky Blue Sky</a></span><span style="font-size:85%;"> (on my newly fixed iPod!).</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">What I'm reading: <a href="http://www.blogger.com/doris%20lessing">Doris Lessing</a>'s <a href="http://www.powells.com/biblio/61-9780060924171-0"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Real Thing</span></a>.</span><br /></div>Jocelynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15949266385418416911noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37430589.post-43671015314694927222007-10-28T21:24:00.000-07:002007-10-28T21:56:58.128-07:00I miss my ball winder.Another item packed somewhere in my storage space is my ball winder. Yay!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Most recent podcast: <a href="http://www.wnyc.org/shows/shorts/">Selected Shorts</a>.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Currently listening to: Mel Brook's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blazing_Saddles">Blazing Saddles</a> (heehee!)</span><span style="font-size:85%;">.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">What I'm reading: <a href="doris%20lessing">Doris Lessing</a>'s <a href="http://www.powells.com/biblio/61-9780060924171-0"><span style="font-style: italic;">The Real Thing</span></a>.</span><br /></div>Jocelynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15949266385418416911noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37430589.post-70244050079293864352007-10-18T09:42:00.000-07:002007-10-18T10:50:22.600-07:00State of the Union.<a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/tangled%20yoke">Tangled Yoke</a> is blocking as I type -- in the garage, so I'm sure she's going to smell like gasoline for the next few days. Thanks much to Mary Lynn for the wonderful comment. I really do love the sweater, it's just that frustrating little perfectionist voice in my head that gets in the way -- but I still can't wait until it's done blocking so I can add the buttons and wear it!<br /><br />With TY nearing completion, I've been scouting new projects, and reconsidering the old. I've got the <a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/baltic%20socks">Baltic Socks</a> on the needles, as well as the <a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/urban%20aran">Urban Aran</a> that desperately needs a new collar so it can be worn, the poor neglected thing. The <a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/bella%20blouse">Bella Blouse</a> has floundered while I try to figure out the ramifications of substituting <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/tahki-cotton-classic">Tahki Cotton Classic</a> (Ravelry) for the <a href="http://www.ravelry.com/yarns/library/berroco-touche">Berroco Touche</a> (Ravelry) -- the yarn shop recommended it. No real gauge is used for the patterned details, but using the Tahki my bottom band is much longer than the finished measurements of the top. My other two projects, <a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/capecho">Capecho</a> and <a href="http://wildthingsrunfast.blogspot.com/search/label/kiri">Kiri</a>, have been classified as hibernating for now (explaining their removal from the sidebar over there). You see, when I moved west, I sort of assumed that I'd find a job within a month, make a final move and settle in to a new place. So when I landed here in southern Washington, we crammed all of our (mine and TreeHugger's) belongings into storage as best we could. Leaving my yarn in the back corner of a 5'x10' storage space brimming with what you see below. Well, that was two months ago, and no job yet. So Capecho and Kiri are unreachable, as are all of my patterns and the supplies for the <a href="http://www.sweaterbabe.com/product_kp25.htm">Romantic Cables and Lace vest</a>, <a href="http://www.interweaveknits.com/preview/2007_summer.asp">Spiral Boot Socks</a>, <a href="http://eweniquefiber.blogspot.com/2006/11/free-knitting-pattern-inga-hat.html">The Inga Hat</a>, and several other unnamed projects. Which frees me up for the<a href="http://brooklyntweed.blogspot.com/2007/08/hemlock-ring-blanket.html"> Hemlock Ring Blanket</a> (yarn to be ordered later today), of course, but without an income I'd really like to get at that box. Frustratingly, you can see it in the picture below -- that box on the upper right. Grr!<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN0s4PFsCaosDTdDEP3uyMvxQnl8EqZraz_iy_keBKuoYDBmrE0MmKeLdCDKx6X7tWDdFl6kXglYTui1y1A80bXP1-BEdJP1OOSv-K6ALajNqyH9rCFq8ZlcHsSBUsPdLOzVIh/s1600-h/all_small.jpg"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN0s4PFsCaosDTdDEP3uyMvxQnl8EqZraz_iy_keBKuoYDBmrE0MmKeLdCDKx6X7tWDdFl6kXglYTui1y1A80bXP1-BEdJP1OOSv-K6ALajNqyH9rCFq8ZlcHsSBUsPdLOzVIh/s320/all_small.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122728252780222306" border="0" /></a>Otherwise, progress continues on Joel's hat. It's been funny to make the leap from big and/or somewhat focus-intensive projects to *k2, p2, repeat from * in the round. It's just flying by:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHuzPGF8-xvvV7GlmFZ-YqJbCEQJT6nuU83UVH3kqHURhRtNdZBywnLKLdCqLoJSGxQejN5NqoAbXNs5-qknDHkrxn1fOsB2IQwUDdrDSFHm7RnPbVmBUEAYz4wyAv6JNOUNgk/s1600-h/Hat_small.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHuzPGF8-xvvV7GlmFZ-YqJbCEQJT6nuU83UVH3kqHURhRtNdZBywnLKLdCqLoJSGxQejN5NqoAbXNs5-qknDHkrxn1fOsB2IQwUDdrDSFHm7RnPbVmBUEAYz4wyAv6JNOUNgk/s320/Hat_small.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5122729511205640050" border="0" /></a><br />TY should be done by Friday, and hopefully I'll get a little photo shoot in over the weekend.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size:85%;">Most recent podcast: <a href="http://www.craftlit.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=216136">CraftLit Episode 54</a>.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Currently listening to: </span><span style="font-size:85%;"><a href="http://www.brandicarlile.com/">Brandi Carlile</a>'s The Story</span><span style="font-size:85%;">.</span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">What I should be doing: Preparing for this weekend's party, returning email.</span><br /></div>Jocelynhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15949266385418416911noreply@blogger.com0
